Welcome
Hey there! Thanks for stopping by my website. This is an opportunity for you to get to know Doc Dill. I’m excited for you to check out my research, teaching, and poetry passions and projects and for us to engage more.
Dr. LeConté J. Dill was born and raised in South Central Los Angeles, California, the granddaughter of sojourners of the 2nd Wave of the Great Migration. She remains curious about sojourning, migrations, and landing and launching places and spaces. “Le Conte” literally means “The Fairy Tale,” and likewise, LeConté listens to, documents, dreams, and creates stories of reimagining. She is a scholar, educator, and a poet in and out of classroom and community spaces. Read More…
Community-Accountable Scholar
My research is rooted in and answerable to the communities that I love, come from, live in, and am invited into. I have nurtured and am nurturing enduring partnerships committed to co-learning, co-scholarship, and mutual appreciation with young people, their adult allies, and other community leaders in California, Georgia, New York, Michigan, and South Africa. Our work focused on safety, healing, resilience, and wellness has been co-published and co-presented in a myriad of places and spaces nationally, internationally, and digitally.
Transdisciplinary Educator
Since 2009, I have taught and guest lectured graduate, undergraduate, and high school courses in public health, sociology, creative writing, urban planning, and education. My teaching philosophy is participatory in nature and based on reflexive teaching, where my students and I become co-learners, actively engaged in inquiry. Mentoring is a deep passion of mine and complements my teaching. Mentoring happens inside and outside of the classroom—in office hours, in cafes, in community meetings, over Zoom, through Track Changes, and via email.
Testimony
When I teach, I awaken.
When I teach, I represent.
When I teach, I remember
myself to myself.
I won’t stop this
even out of the classroom,
out of the school,
out of the academy.
My words demand that you remember me
remembering us.
Creative Writer
I have been writing creatively from a very young age and have studied poetry and fiction with Ruth Forman, Suheir Hammad, Gregory Pardlo, Cornelius Eady, Opal Moore, and ZZ Packer, among others. My work is inspired by the voices of Black female ancestors, Black girls and women who are known and unknown to me, and Black girls from the future. In 2016, I was a Callaloo Creative Writing Workshop Fellow. I also teach and facilitate poetry classes and workshops.
Wellness Practitioner
I hold space for wellness journeys and commitments of myself, my students, and my communities. These wellness praxes are primarily currently enacted through poetics, embodiment, and mindfulness. Relatedly, I am a certified meditation instructor.
